A little bitter, a little sweet and a whole lot delicious, tonic water has been around since the 17th century where it was used to treat malaria and aid digestion. The theory behind these medicinal properties, as well as the mixers distinctive bitter flavour comes from its natural quinine content.
To counter the bitter taste of quinine, a bucketload of sugar was added to the original tonic water mix, helping it to wash down that little bit smoother! The British then added a nip of their favourite spirit, gin, and voila! The first G&T was born.
But don’t despair! A guilt-free, natural G&T is still on the cards. That’s why we’ve crafted a delicious all natural and sugar free tonic water range. These bubbly bottles have the refreshing and exotic flavours of premium tonics, just without the buckets full of sugar or artificial ingredients.
Nexba All Natural and Sugar Free Tonic Waters contain all of the good bits and none of the bad. We’re proudly Naturally Sugar-Free. You can trust that our Nexba Tonic Water range will always contain:
All natural ingredients
No sugar or fructose
No artificial sweeteners
No preservatives

You might not haverealised it before, but tonic water can be just as bad as – and sometimes even worse than – classic soft drinks when it comes to sugar and artificial ingredients.
Did you know that the average 1L bottle of tonic water contains roughly 22 teaspoons of sugar!? That’s a whopping 4x more than the World Health Organization’s total recommended daily intake of sugar.
And sadly, most classic ‘sugar-free’ options on the market are just pumped with artificial sweeteners instead.
If you’re looking to health-ify your gin and tonics, you’re not alone! The better-for-you drinks movement is quickly gaining popularity thanks to new low calorie, lowsugar mixer options finding their way onto supermarket shelves around Australia. With all the new ‘healthy’ drinks on the market, it can be tricky to navigate which ones are actually better for you and which ones aren’t so crash hot.
There’s nothing more classic than a G&T. It’s fresh, clean, bubbly and one of the easiest drinks to make at home. But a little-known fact is that the average serve of tonic water has over 6.5 teaspoons of sugar!
There are plenty of pre-made G&T’s on the market but sadly, most are loaded with sugar and artificial sweeteners, ready to bring you down from your Summer-G&T-in-the-garden vibe. And yes, you can thank sugar overdoses for your groggy hangover the next day, too!
It’s common knowledge that sugar is no good for you. Not only is it making diabetes more common, it’s full of empty calories, saps your energy, can cause inflammation and affect your brain power! It can easily hide in your food and drinks, and it’s easy for us to have too much.
That’s where Nexba comes in. We’re proud to be Australia’s only 100% Naturally Sugar Free Tonic Water. So swap the pre-made stuff and sugar-laden tonic waters with Nexba, for a guilt-free G&T!
The first Tonic Water, also known as Indian Tonic Water contained quinine, sugar and soda water. These days, modern tonic water recipes haven’t strayed far from their roots. Most tonic waters are still made with quinine, which is an ingredient that comes from the bark of the cinchona tree, most commonly found in South America, Central America, the islands of the Caribbean, and parts of the western coast of Africa.
Quinine was traditionally developed as a medicine to fight malaria. While it’s not used to prevent malaria, but rather to kill the organism responsible for the disease. Another use? To create the beautiful bitter taste in your favourite tonic water!
To counter the bitter taste of quinine, many tonic waters add flavours and sweeteners to create a more balanced sip. Unfortunately, many tonic waters on the market are filled with refined sugar and artificial ingredients.
Artificial sweeteners and flavours are just that: they’re artificial. They’re made up of chemicals that derive from all kinds of sources and are the main sweetener choice for diet soft drinks and ‘sugar-free’ processed food.
Here’s the deal: pretty much all artificial sweeteners have one thing in common – they’re a lot sweeter than ordinary sugar. You’d think that would encourage you to eat a smaller amount of artificially sweetened products, but unfortunately, studies have shown that it has the opposite effect.
These super-sweet artificial sweeteners can actually lead to side effects like increased appetite, nausea and fatigue and develop into more serious side effects like gut health issues, heart problems and even cancer.
Be wary of labels that say ‘No artificial colours or flavours’, too. The colour and flavour may be natural, but the sweetener is still made from chemicals that your body won’t enjoy. It’s a no from us! Instead look for the magic combination of no artificials, colours, flavours AND sweeteners.
As a general guide, it’s always better to opt for natural ingredients rather than artificial ones. They’re usually going to be less processed, contain less chemicals and be just all-round better for you.
Natural sweeteners are essentially plant derivatives that taste like sugar but contain little calories and some health benefits. Unlike artificial sweeteners, they’re not made from synthetic sugar substitutes and won’t contribute to tooth decay and cavities!
That’s why we’ve included Nexba’s Naturally Sugar Free blend into our tonic water range. Made with Purified Sparkling Water, Nexba Natural Sweetener Blend, Citric Acid (found naturally in citrus fruits like lemons and limes), Natural Flavours and Cinchona bark extract, Nexba’s entire range of sugar free tonic waters are completely natural, and entirely sugar-free. The best part? They taste so good; you’d never even know! So, you can put your feet up and go back to sipping your Sunday G&T on the balcony guilt-free.
Did you know that the average 1L bottle of Tonic Water contains a whopping 22 teaspoons of sugar!? Meaning just a single G&T will see you tipping over your daily recommended intake of sugar.
If you think your gin and tonic is healthier than a rum and cola, you’d be surprised to find out they’re not that different. A single gin and tonic contains a whopping four teaspoons of sugar inside compared to a rum and cola which has 5 teaspoons of sugar. And all that sugar comes directly from the mixer!
Traditional tonic waters can contain just as much sugar as classic soft drinks, so your go-to hour sip is unfortunately not as healthy as you might have hoped.
But don’t panic! You can still enjoy your favourite tonic water without consuming all that sugar. The best sugar free tonic water is made right here in Australia, and it’s Nexba’s all natural and completely sugar free tonic water range.
You can shop Australia’s first all natural, sugar free iced tea right here, or in store at Coles and Woolworths.
